In Mauritius, it is important to apply for business registration with the Corporate and Business Registration Department (CBRD) before starting any new business activity. A business can be registered in Mauritius in one day. The registration fees applicable for Business Registration depends on the workforce at the time of application and is as follows:
- Not more than 10 persons: Rs. 125
- Between 11 and 50 persons: Rs. 250
- Between 51 and 100 persons: Rs. 600
- Above 100 persons: Rs. 1,500
The above registration fees do not apply to companies and commercial partnerships.
What is “business”?
The law provides a list of activities in its definition of business.
Business includes:
- every form of trade, commerce or manufacture, craftsmanship, calling, profession, vocation: or occupation or any other activity carried on by a person for the purposes of gain or profit;
- Any activity of a co-operative society, an association, a trade union.
Duties of a registered business
Every registered business in Mauritius shall:
- Use its business name, if any, and its business registration number (BRN) in all communications
- Display its business registration card in a conspicuous place at every place of business
- Inform the CBRD of any change in the nature of business activity or change of address within 14 days
- Notify the CBRD of cessation or transfer of business within 15 days
- Pay trade fees to the CBRD
- Renew its business card every 3 years
- Pay annual registration fee to the CBRD
